[ laughing ] >> romona: now at 4:00, there is a throwback thursday for you. remember this video from last season? browns fans aren't hoping for a repeat as they prepare to take on the atlanta falcons in their first pre-season home game. the energy despite the brown's struggle is always electric as fans hold out hope for a winning team. >> mark: tony zarrella is at first energy stadium right now awaiting kickoff.
4:01 pm
here, tony? what have we got? >> reporter: >> tony: well, i'd like to see more of rgiii. one of the concerns with rg in dc after the leg injury slowed him down was in the pocket, he was inaccurate. had a hard time running defenses. i thought we saw a glimpse of that last week. he started sailing his passes. even if he plays just one-half like the other starters, i want to of robert griffin. corey coleman number one pick. dynamic players. he's been one of the best players in camp. he's coming off a hamstring injury. he's not concerned about it. it's likely they'll hold him out one more week and look ahead next friday night. you have terrelle pryor. at some point, wow, would that be a big three. maybe terrelle pryor.
4:02 pm
what may be down the line. >> there's a lot of thoughts that go through my mind. i can't tell you all of them. but they're a talented trio. and we have some other guys too. but they are. those guys have -- they have size. they have speed. they have length. they have the ability to make plays on the ball. and that's exciting. but, again, we haven't had them all out there together yet really. they've been out there for the past couple of days doing some things. but hopefully we can in the future, that all works out. get all of these guys out there playing together f offensive football team. >> tony: ramona, he mentions the other guys. the fifth round pick. you have higgins out of colorado state. i'm looking for jordan peyton as well. there's an opportunity here, at least for these guys to get on the stage. the other draft picks show us what they've got on a night when you may not see the big guns in terms of their receivers. >> romona: we're going to talk more about the browns coming up in timeout at 4:40. we want to bring in shelby miller.
4:03 pm
you know, tony, fans get excited about the browns and they're ready to tailgate, i'm sure? shelby? >> reporter: yes, unfortunately it doesn't look like that many people are here right now. we were here at noon. we showed you what the lot looked like then. there are a few more cars now. but it is still kind of dead here at the muni lot. but there's a group of people that have been here since the lot opened at 10:0 jason, where are you at? this is my buddy jason who we met at 10:00 this morning. what have you guys been doing? >> just getting ready for the browns it take the field. playing a little corn hole. a little can jam. having fun. >> reporter: are you surprised it's still so empty? >> i am a little surprised. ready for the brownies, right? >> reporter: how do you think they're going to do tonight? >> tonight i think they're going to do very well. i think they're going to run the ball good. get some passing. get some rgiii action going on and ready to go. >> reporter: for people who are
4:04 pm
say to them? get down here? >> yes, get down here, guys. it's a beautiful day. come out and hang out and get ready for the browns town. right. >> reporter: thank you so much. >> thank you. >> reporter: they've been grilling today. they've been playing corn hole. there's music going. also check out this bus that is here. that is the browns bus. it's a school bus. they have converted. it's really cool. we went inside. there's a bar inside. a lot of people hanging out in there too. but, yes, i mean, we can't say it enough. it's just really empty here in the muni this opened up at 10:00. this isn't what i expected. this is my first year here. so i guess i don't know what to expect. but people did talk it up. now the western lot, that will be opened up at 5:00. i don't know if we need much more room because this one needs to be filled. come on down if you're going to the game tonight. come visit this. even if you're not going to go to the game tonight, just come out and support the browns pre-season home opener happening here tonight. guys. >> romona: i gave you that big
4:05 pm
excitement. >> mark: there it is. there it was. one bus. >> romona: she shows us empty parking lot. >> mark: that's all there is. >> romona: shelby is new here. it's going to fill up, shelby. >> mark: it will. trust us. >> romona: i hope. [ laughing ] to avoid traffic troubles out there, here is what you need to do. here is a tip. rta offering -- >> first alert traffic on cleveland 19 news is sponsored by ford. >> mark: overtop of this. no matter what happens, i'm still talking now. 4:06 pm
folks coming in moving towards us are headed north towards the stadium where the browns are playing tonight. folks headed south, those are the taillights you see, they are headed towards the indians game. or maybe they're headed home. or maybe they're doing something else like heading over to get a good spot at the q for paul mccartney who is in down for another minutes. cars going north may be going to edgewater live which takes place a little later. we have a lot going on here. i've been seeing people in browns jerseys walking the sidewalks heading north. i've seen people in indians gear heading south on 9th street walking along. people coming out of the hotels here dressed in gear. and even cleveland's finest have been on the street, and they've been taking care of things so far. so things looking nice. and it's a beautiful night to be outside. but i don't want to tell you about that. i want to turn that over to jeff and let him tell you about the weather.
4:07 pm
and we're missing out on the storms. that's good. i'm keeping us dry tonight. you couldn't ask for better weather for all of the stuff going on. and that humidity is dropped a little bit. so it is a little more pleasant out there this evening. let's go to the current numbers. we are at 83 in cleveland right now. look at akron at 87. a little cooler along the lakeshore. it's more like 81, 82 degrees downtown and partly cloudy sky. now, out the door forecast. 5:00, 82. 6:00, when the tribe will have their first pitch at 7:10 officially. right around 80 degrees we're thinking there. warm and humid right through saturday. so the humidity is going to go back up tomorrow. best risk of storms, we think saturday night. and that will be with the front. that's going to be a big front. there's a huge cooldown on the way that starts on sunday. i'm going to detail all of that for you coming up. but enjoy tonight. i mean, it's looking fantastic

ramona. new at 4:00, police at john carol university are investigating a reported hazing incident during a lake catholic high school football camp last month. the three day camp took place on jcu's campus on mid july and the report was filed two weeks later. parents received a letter that the reported football camp hazing incident is under investigation. no details have been released and calls to lake catholic high school today have not been returned. the investigation is into why a driver veered off the jennings freeway and into the back of a cleveland water department truck. paul orlousky was first on the scene. >> paul: traffic slowed but never stopped as police investigated. on its face, the accident looked like a simple one. a van off the side of the road and into some weeds. it was far more serious. pieces of the van littered the highway from what was obviously an explosive collision. the van had hit a water department dump truck, a vehicle
4:09 pm
it was no contest. a preliminary investigation shows the water truck was off on the side of the road. you can see where the van ran into it in the back. it's like hitting what is an unmovable object. it happens where you seep the v. many questions remain. why was the water department dump truck stopped on the highway. there is no information right now on what may have caused the driver to veer off the road. possibilities are a medical condition, some other impairment the cleveland police accident investigation unit has taken over the probe into the cause. digging for answers, paul orlousky, cleveland 19. orlo, thank you. the flood disaster in louisiana has brought the death toll to 13. and forecasters warn more rain is on the way. 3 and a half inches fell slowing recovery efforts. 40,000 homes have been damaged in the floods. 20% of homes in louisiana have

live from cleveland's news center, driven by don joseph toyota in kent, this is cleveland 19 news. police in brazil say u.s. plik gold medalist ryan lochte did not tell the truth about getting robbed at gunpoint. authorities are questioning three american swimmers who were with lochte the night of the incident. jamie yu cast has the details. >> reporter: surveillance footage shows four swimmers at a gas station. at one point the men are seen leaving their taxi and made to sit on the ground with their hands in the air.
4:15 pm
says this is a confrontation with the security guard over damage to a bathroom. not an armed robbery. this new information contradicts what swimmer ryan lochte claimed. >> the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it my forehead and said get down. i put my hands up. i was like whatever. >> reporter: lochte has already left brazil but jack conger, gunnar bentz and james feigen a judge ruled she wanted to hear from them again. brazilian authorities began doubting the report when the stories did not match. lochte first said there was a single gunman. feigen said there were several. and lochte changed his story to say there were two. one olympic official is saving them. they said the american athletes are cooperating with the investigation.
4:16 pm
>> mark: the swimmers did not call police after the incident. lochte told his mother he was robbed. she then told reporters. the internet has given the story a life of its own. enter hashtag #lochte gate. >> dan: if i ever commit a crime, it will become lochte gate. it is lochte gate and you have to spell it right. l o c h t e gate. let's take a look at comments. matt is saying this guy deserves a gold medal for competetive lying. let's see. here it goes. political bob says ugly american behavior in a foreign country. disrespecting the olympics. the u.s. and all other athletes in rio, four idiots hashtag #lochte gate. let's get to a couple more. i like this one. jeff says lochte gate is the definition of the coverup is worse than the crime.
4:17 pm
i did like el la blue saying the ioc should scrip ryan of his medal. i think more than one. medals. that's kind of one thing that we looked into. mark and ramona, we did check what it would take to strip lochte of his medals if that's a possibility. they say it is. the ioc, it's up to them. and they would have to refer it to the swimming sub committee. they would review it and the sub committee actually would have the -- as a disciplinary part of this,he u.s. swimming contingent, which nobody thinks that's is going to happen. that's reserved if they find there is steroid use or some form of cheating. but it is possible because of this, first of all, he's given the u.s. a black eye. >> romona: yes. a lot of foreign countries you visit, they especially want to take care of american tourists because they want you to come back and have possibly more tourism. so to do that, that's just -- that's childish. >> dan: not smart.
4:18 pm
that adds the question -- adds to the questions, i should say, surrounding the safety of calcium supplements. researchers studied 700 dementia-free women between the ages of 70 and 92 and followed them for five years. they looked at calcium supplement use and dementia diagnosis throughout the study. results show that women with a history of stroke who took calcium supplements had nearly 7 times the increased risk of developing dementia. >> this is a good time to talk to your doctor about what supplements you should be taking. what is best in my specific instance given my risk factors and my medical history. >> romona: doctors say more research is needed and this study shouldn't cause anyone to immediately stop taking their calcium. but it should spark a discussion with your health care provider. gyms are always trying new ads to get your attention. well, gold's gym, dream land in

[ laughing ] >> jeff: a lot. free fall. >> mark: that means i would be outdoor in the sun. that's not going to happen. >> romona: that's right. >> jeff: any time you see or hear the word free fall in a ride. [ laughing ] >> jeff: be it water slide or anything else >> mark: i'm not it. >> jeff: my goodness. afternoon for the water park. we have -- we're in the 80s. and it is very nice. the storms staying away. and i think they're going to stay away tonight as well. now, let's look at our future view model here. we're going to go to tomorrow night where it's still going to be dry for your friday night here. and now we're thinking saturday most of the day, certainly the first half of the day is looking pretty dry. here is 2:00 saturday afternoon and then we'll hit it here at 4:00. and you start to see showers and storms developing to the west of
4:21 pm
night. so we do have a yellow alert actually starting saturday afternoon. but the best risk after 8:00 p.m. this as a strong cold front will be coming through. and, boy, that's going to really send the temperatures plunging by the time we get to sunday. there is your partly cloudy sky out there. right now a few storms around lima. but we think those are going to stay away and fizzle as the daytime heating comes to an end. all right. browns game 8:00 p.m. 78 at kickoff. 74 in the second half. just a few clouds around. perfect night for a pre-season game. and waves only around a foot out there. the wind is going to be pretty light. so over all, not bad at all. 66 the low. partly cloudy. akron-canton. you're down to 64. tomorrow 86 the high tomorrow. could be an isolated storm during the afternoon.
4:22 pm
and as we look at the weekend here, what a change. we go from 89 to near 90 on saturday. a few afternoon storms. saturday night a better opportunity of storms. and then plunge. 70 on sunday. and there could be some showers around mainly in the morning we're thinking here on sunday. monday 75. tuesday 78. wednesday back up to 83 and comfortable. mark and ramona, back to you. >> mark: jeff, thanks. trending today, ohio corn maze that you have to see to believe. and thursday it might seem like an ordinary day for some, but for others wanting to tie

4:27 pm
>> mark: there you go, rodney. now you don't have to go to the gym anymore. you don't have to do any grocery shopping anymore. you're good, man. right? >> romona: he's a good guy. it's all good. >> mark: sometimes people are just doing things to get things done. it's okay. this you have to see to believe. maple side farms has unveiled a theme for this corn maze. take a look. they're honoring our 2016 nba champion cavs. they have three parts, including a side profile of lebron james. the maze will open up on october 12th as part of the fall festival. >> romona: that's cool. >> mark: i like it. business boom. what some are calling a traffic headache with all of the events going on downtown. not if you look at shelby's life. others see it as a blessing.

. always watching, always tracking. now your first alert forecast. >> jeff: we are always watching and always tracking. and right now we are tracking nothing but pleasant weather conditions out there. it's going to be a perfect night. and not super muggy. at least not right now. the humidity level dropped a little bit. it's moderately humid. that's what you expect this time of year. at least most days. 81 at 00 78 at 8:00. 75 at 10:00. 72 degrees there at midnight. and 71 at 2:00 in the morning. right now at burke lakefront airport, it is 79. that's pretty much the story now in the muni lot where that temperature is 79, near 80 degrees. not too bad. akron-canton 85. and just some high clouds around. and the wind is light. there's a look at downtown cleveland. we're talking about warmth and
4:32 pm
and then here comes that big cold front. and you have to go all the way back to july 16th since we saw a day where the high temperature did not hit 80. and i think we're going to see that on sunday because that's when the big cooldown starts. so saturday afternoon, saturday night especially. that's when the yellow alert will be in play. not talking about widespread severe but there could be some heavy rains with these storms as they come to. and right now on it looks like the best risk will come after 8:00. here is your forecast tomorrow. 86. isolated storm threat there during the afternoon, which means a small chance. 71 at 8:00 a.m. but at 2:00, we're up to 85. we're going to go back outside to jon loufman checking things out from a rooftop. and how are things looking? >> jon: things on 9th street are looking really good.

we're between rock well and superior. folks headed out of town going home from work. but, hey, george, were you able to get a couple of guys down here in the browns jersey, because they're coming across. we've been seeing these folks coming north towards the stadium in browns gear. and then heading south towards progressive field in indians gear. and the traffic is starting to build here. simply because we have so many ee events. not to mention that paul concert happening at the q. edgewater live not too far from here. very busy time on east 9th street and getting even busier. but people are having fun in downtown cleveland, mark and ramona. this is a good night for our city. back to you. >> romona: all right, jon. we love fun. >> mark: yes. businesses downtown haven't seen or been this fired up since the rnc. >> mark: yes. and it's all because of the boom
4:34 pm
evening ahead. shanice dunning talked to businesses. this is the best since the rnc? >> reporter: yes. that's what some of them told me as they were busy getting ready. some businesses i talked to on west 9th street said the rnc absolutely killed them. with everything going on with the concerts to the sporting events, we talked up to the business owners happy to gear up for the big crowds coming into town. it's going to be a busy weekend in downtown cleveland. tonight paul mccartney there's an indians game plus the browns pre-season opener. >> let's go, browns. >> reporter: owner of tomo restaurant on west 9th is looking forward to it all. >> i didn't see what is going on. >> reporter: many businesses over here, including his, didn't see as much traffic as they had hoped during the rnc. >> we can make more in one browns game in a restaurant than republican convention. >> reporter: the city says there will be an influx of

4:45 pm
